What will it cost to power your house with solar in Nigeria? Find out here. 

This post was triggered by an earlier post, where I was asked about the affordability of solar panels in Nigeria. If you missed my post on the common myths about solar panels, you can read it here.

In this post I broke down  what it will cost to power your house with energy from the sun. For readers in Nigeria, I have included an average cost based on a detailed market survey. It is easy to think of the initial cost of going solar as expensive, but considering the proven life span of solar panels to be about 25years, you are assured you can use the same panels from when you have a new child till when your child goes off to university and even longer. Though decline in efficiency has often been recorded but it is said to be insignificant until about the 5th – 10th year of installation.

It is important to note that you need an inverter integrated into your solar system. If you already own an inverter, smile because your solar quote will not be as expensive as your neighbour who does not have an inverter.

Usually there are accessories that come with your solar system, however I will only focus on the number of panels and the number of batteries required which are the basic elements.

Another important point to note is the fact that the duration given for each solar system, I.e the number of hours a solar system can work for is only when the panels are not generating energy. So if your solar system has the ability to power 6 light bulbs for 10 hours, that implies it will power the 6 light bulb throughout the day while the sun is up and further power the 6 light bulbs for 10 hours while the sun is down.

A misconception I will like to change is the fact that solar systems are only used to power light bulbs. In reality, depending on the system you have, solar panels can power air conditioners, refrigerators, dispensers, and several other appliances.

Is it possible for you to completely get off the grid? Absolutely. Though with an initial lump sum depending on the capacity of your house. I guess the most important point here is that it is possible.

As you get a solar system, the idea of energy efficiency becomes absolutely important. You begin to understand why the bathroom bulb shouldn’t be left on while not in use or why it is better to buy an energy saving bulb.

If you plan to go solar in the future, you can start practicing energy efficiency now, beginning with checking power consumption of appliances in your home before purchasing.

A couple of assumptions were made in creating he table above:

1. That all the appliance will be in use throughout the 6-8 hours period

2. That the air conditioning is 1-1.5 hp

3. That the panel are working at optimum efficiency.

On an average, a Panel cost between NGN 30,000 to NGN 35,000 while batteries cost about NGN 70,000 – NGN85,0000 depending on the brand
